Gay Ottawa Volleyball announces new youth drop-in programming through new grant from Their Opportunity and Ottawa Sport Council

Ottawa, Ontario

Gay Ottawa Volleyball (GOV) is pleased to announce new youth drop-in programming beginning Fall 2023. This programming is being made possible through a generous grant from Their Opportunity, through the Ottawa Sport Council.

GOV will deliver a regular, two-hour 2SLGBTQ+ drop-in and skills development program targeted at youth aged primarily from 13 to 18. The program provides a safe and inclusive environment for 2SLGBTQ+ youth to participate in organized sport where they can learn new volleyball skills, socialize, and build their self-confidence. The sessions will be led by a coordinator, supported by court leaders, who will conduct a one-hour skills development workshop followed by a one-hour game of volleyball to provide the opportunity for youth participants to practice their newly learned skills. Occasional social events following sessions will allow youth and their families to socialize and build new friendships.

“We recognize the opportunity to increase safe and inclusive sports spaces in Ottawa for youth and want to be a part of the solution to foster new ones. We are so appreciative of the support from Their Opportunity and our friends at the Ottawa Sport Council for helping to make this possible,” said Gay Ottawa Volleyball’s President, David Muddiman.

"Their Opportunity is incredibly proud to support Gay Ottawa Volleyball (GOV) as they are creating a safe and inclusive space for 2SLGBTQ+ youth to learn volleyball skills, build self-confidence, and foster new friendships. We believe in that sport has the ability to empower and unite communities, and we are thrilled to be a part of this initiative. Together, we are making a positive impact on the lives of youth and promoting inclusivity in sports," said Matthew Cronin, Director, National Programming & Communications at Their Opportunity.

“We are delighted to be able to support Gay Ottawa Volleyball’s drop-in program for 2SLGBTQ+ youth. The Ottawa Sport Council believes there should only be positive experiences in sport for all members of the Ottawa community. GOV’s program will provide a safe and welcoming environment to ensure this is possible for these youth,” said Marcia Morris, Ottawa Sport Council Executive Director.
