Adapted Programming for Fall 2020

***Le français suit***

Dear Gay Ottawa Volleyball participants,

Our 30th anniversary season is around the corner! We hope that everyone is staying healthy and happy this summer. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, there remains a lot of uncertainty for the 2020-21 volleyball season. Rest assured that, if we can operate this year, we will follow COVID-19 safety protocols and a new refund policy.

Please take a few minutes to carefully read all of the information below:

Monday Drop-in – OPEN WITH CHANGES

As long as Ottawa remains in Phase 3, the Rideau Sports Centre (RSC) is open for our Monday time slot!

To operate within Phase 3 guidelines, Monday nights will work differently:

  • Our time-slot will be from 6:15 to 8:15 pm
  • Maximum capacity of 48 people, which must be a closed group
  • First night of play would be September 14
  • Registration and payment in advance for a series of sessions
  • Registration will open on September 7

Wednesday League – CLOSED UNTIL JANUARY 2021

Unfortunately, it is looking like we will have to postpone the Wednesday League, and start it in January 2021.

The school board with most of our gym permits (OCDSB) has officially cancelled all community use of school facilities until the end of December 2020. Other school boards are making month-by-month decisions, or haven’t announced anything yet.

If the situation changes over the fall and enough gyms open up to allow for some adapted programming, we will let you know. Until we have clear information from our partner facilities, we cannot announce any more firm details.

Social gatherings

We will not be actively organizing our Meet and Greet night, nor any post-volleyball socializing at the Lieutenant’s Pump. But we hope that you do what you can to support the Pump in any way that works for you.

New Player Portal – coming soon!

Since Fall 2019, we have been working to launch a new online system to make it easier for players to register and easier for volunteers to organize GOV programs and events.

In a few days, we will send out another email to let you know when the portal is online. No matter your situation, we encourage you to create a profile so that we can get you into our system.

Once the portal is online, please create your player profile as soon as possible, so we can add your $20 credit from the shortened 2019-20 season (if eligible)

Stay tuned! We know you must have more specific questions about how everything will work. We aim to publish more detailed information very soon.

Gay Ottawa Volleyball’s Board of Directors

******************************************************************************************

Effective March 15: All GOV activities are suspended due to COVID-19 coronavirus

Following the recommendation made by Ottawa Public Health (on Sunday March 15, 2020) to cancel all gatherings, all GOV activities are cancelled until further notice, due to the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak.

We are in the process of assessing the impact of this unprecedented situation and developing contingency plans for the rest of the season.

In the event that Monday drop-in volleyball sessions are able to resume, we will publish precautionary measures based on the most up-to-date and best available information.

The Wednesday League will be suspended until at least April 6. Click here for more information.

Please also follow our Facebook page and website for real-time updates.

Stay safe and healthy, and thank you for your cooperation.

Wednesday League Reminder: No matches on November 6

Due to a critical mass of closures at the schools we use (for parent-teacher interviews), the week of November 6 is a break-week for the Wednesday League. We will resume with Week 7 on Wednesday November 13.

Rest assured, the November 6 night off does not impact the total number of weeks of volleyball scheduled for the season. We still have a 24-week regular season scheduled, plus two weeks for playoffs and a buffer week in case of snow days.

Don’t forget: Monday Drop-in remains open per usual, from 6 to 8pm at the Rideau Sports Centre. Come by!

Teams: take the night off and do something special together! The Lieutenant’s Pump will be ready to welcome us just like any other week!

Halloween Week @ GOV! (Mon Oct 28 and Wed Oct 30)

On October 28 and 30, you are invited to come play dressed in the spirit of the season and who knows, maybe scare the other team ou of a few points!

But remember, if you play in costume, please remember to wear proper footwear. Safety first, people!

And please no glitter!

Happy Halloween!

Thanksgiving Monday (Oct 14): Earlier time for drop-in volleyball!

Interested participating in GOV Drop-in volleyball this Thanksgiving Monday?

On Monday October 14, Drop-in volleyball will be from 4:00 to 6:00pm due to reduced holiday hours at the Rideau Sports Centre!

There will be four volleyball courts available and other than the earlier time slot the evening will run just like any other night of GOV Drop-in volleyball!

See you on the court!

On Sept 16, Monday Drop-in volleyball is moving to the Rideau Sports Centre!

Our Monday Night Drop-in program will take place at the Rideau Sports Centre (RSC) this year, from 6:00 to 8:00pm, starting on Monday September 16, 2019.We have all four courts, and the earlier time slot allows for more social time afterward.

Registration for the 2019-20 volleyball season will open on Friday August 30, at 7:00pm (on govleague.ca).

All skill levels welcome. The expansion to four courts enables the Monday program to better accommodate a variety of skill levels, which may include (as needed) a court for coaching, a court for intermediate or competitive play, or a court set to a women’s net height, if there is sufficient interest.

We are keeping our traditional McArthur location on Monday nights from 8:00 to 10:00pm. We will use this reservation to rent out to teams seeking practice/scrimmage time, to hold Skills & Drills Clinics, and to host a women’s nights pilot program.

More information about Skills & Drills and women’s nights will be posted in the coming weeks.

Get your Drop-in Punch Card!

  • To be able to afford more courts at a better quality facility, prices are going up to $10 ($8.85 +HST) per person per night. We recognize this is a big increase compared to last year’s $5 fee. To help participants save, we are offering a Drop-in Punch Card for $100 ($88.50 +HST).
  • A Punch Card buys 12 sessions, redeemable at any Drop-in night or Skills & Drills Clinic during the 2019-20 season.

If this price increase poses a significant barrier to you participating in GOV programs, please reach out to us. We will try to help as best we can.

Have any questions or ideas about these changes? Write to us at info@govleague.ca.

Don’t forget to join us at the GOV Opening Season Meet and Greet!

  • Where: The Lieutenant’s Pump, 361 Elgin Street
  • When: Wednesday September 4, 2019, 7:00 to 10:00pm

Visit us at the Rideau Sports Centre starting on Monday September 16, and speak with our Drop-in Coordinator, James Mickle.
